SAN ROQUE
Location: From Upper State Street to the foothills, the San Roque neighborhood encompasses an area with Peabody Charter School as its proximate epicenter, and San Roque Road as its main thoroughfare.
Characteristics: Few residential neighborhoods of Santa Barbara can boast the rich historical background of the San Roque area. The neighborhood got its name when the first white men arrived in 1769 with Governor Portola. They camped at the mouth of San Roque Creek, which they named to memorialize the patron saint of invalids, a Carmelite friar of the 14th century.
Now a mature, economicaly stable suburb, it is admired for its sweeping curved streets and harmonious blend of architectural themes: arched doorways, half timbered walls, dormers and step roofs, mostly built since 1925. More so than in any other local neighborhood, the term "pride of ownership" truly applies.
With shopping and banking within a short walk, San Roque residents feel they are living in one of Santa Barbara's choicest neighborhoods, where investing in home or business property guarantees future security.
