THE WESTSIDE

Location:
As any oldtime local will tell you, the Westside is that area surrounded by the freeway to the North, Las Positas Road to the West, and the Mesa to the South/Southeast. Now more broadly used to also include the areas around Cottage Hospital, Oak Park, and generally all streets on the "West" side of State Street, it is considered the city's first suburb.

Characteristics:
The Westside is known for its simple, traditional single family homes, and according to city records, 60% of those homes were built prior to 1940. More so than in any other Santa Barbara neighborhood, there are still mom-and-pop type stores, no shopping malls, and few condominiums or duplexes.
